Travel and Terrain Advice

At lower elevations, the snow surface layer has lost strength due to rainfall. Wet snow avalanches are very heavy, and small ones require caution. Even in forested areas, loose snow avalanches can still occur, so use caution. Also, stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks in them, as they are very dangerous.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (February 18).

Snowpack

Weak rainfall began yesterday afternoon (February 18) and has been in full swing since early today. As a result, the snow in the below treeline is sufficiently wet. A cold front is expected to pass overhead, shifting to a winter pressure pattern and lowering temperatures.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the west, then slightly stronger, rain, and a high of 11°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 4° (as of 5:45 a.m.). Rainfall amounts vary from area to area, but from yesterday evening to this morning, about 20 mm of rain fell.
