Dangerous avalanche conditions. Since early today, the winter pressure pattern has changed to snowfall with strong winds, and we continue to expect a significant amount of snowfall in the coming days. Even if the snowfall is light at this point, we consider the overall conditions to be poor and this is a day for conservative decision-making and route selection with a good safety margin. The weather will worsen in the coming days, so plan your activities with that in mind. For less experienced skiers, this is a good day to play around in the ski area.
Yesterday (February 19), several size 1.5-2 glide avalanches were observed. No mountain avalanche bulletin was received due to stormy weather, but a size 2 storm slab avalanche was reported at the Treeline in the neighboring Hakuba Mountains area.
Rainfall during the afternoon of February 18 and 19 made the snowpack sufficiently wet to produce a glide avalanche. Yesterday evening, the area shifted to a winter pressure pattern, and since early morning it has been snowing in earnest. So far, 20-30 cm of new snow has fallen Below Treeline. The bonding between the new snow and the old snow should be carefully checked.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, slightly stronger winds, snow, and a maximum temperature of 4°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
