Travel and Terrain Advice
These are very dangerous avalanche conditions. Even if you are at a lower elevation, you need to think carefully about whether there are any large start zones above you. Also, be very wary of slabs that form where the terrain is difficult to support snowpack, such as convexity. If you avoid the wind and ski in the forest, do not forget that new snow may be hiding hazardous elements. Rain has created holes in the gully bottom and spread glide cracks, which are now hidden by the new snow. For less experienced skiers, this is a day to enjoy the powder snow in the ski area. If you do so, please make sure to observe the skiing area. Over the past 25 years, there have been no avalanche fatalities on open runs in Japan. This is an extremely excellent record compared to Europe and North America. This safety is due to the diligent daily management of the ski patrol.

Avalanche
Yesterday (February 20), surface snow reacted with ski cuts and flowed as sluff in the Below Treeline. Higher elevations had stormy weather and poor visibility, and no new avalanche reports have come in.
Snowpack
The rain is wet to the Treeline, and there is new snow on it since the early morning of the 19th. The amount of new snow varies by elevation zone, with higher elevations having more new snow. This new snow has increased rapidly since yesterday, reaching 70-80 cm Below Treeline. In addition, the upper part of the Below Treeline has been redistributed by the strong northerly winds, which are gusty even in the forest. The rainfall of the 18th has expanded the glide cracks, which are now hidden by this snowfall.
Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, and occasionally snow until late afternoon, with a high of 0°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -6.5°C (as of 5:00), and 14 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. Also, at AMeDAS Kotani, 32 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
