This is a day to be very careful where wind slabs are forming. This is because the lower layer of the wind slab is likely to have very soft snow and an unstable snowpack structure. Strong winds blew yesterday, so today, look for traces of those winds as you go. If you see slab formations, it is important to avoid them or choose slopes with sufficiently gentle slopes. If you choose simple terrain that is not affected by the wind, you can enjoy a good day of powder riding. Remember to ski from a safe place and watch your friends ski from a safe place. At lower elevations, the wide-open glide cracks are hidden by this snowfall. Continue to make safe route choices until you are completely down the mountain. Have a good day.
Be wary of the unstable slabs that form on the downwind side of the ridge as well as on the sides of the branch ridges.
Beware of unstable snow on isolated terrain such as convexity. Also watch for snow changes on south-facing slopes that are strongly affected by sunny slopes.
Yesterday (February 21), several size 1 storm slab avalanches were observed by ski cutters on very steep slopes. Elevation is unknown due to poor visibility.
New snow since the early morning of February 19 had reached 60-80 cm by yesterday afternoon. This new snow is forming very soft slabs, wet Melt Form at lower elevations and on Melt-Freeze crusts at higher elevations. It has been observed that the bonding strength at the interface between the new and old snow is not bad at lower elevations. At higher elevations, however, its condition is unknown.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, then southerly winds, cloudy, sunny in the evening and partly snowy until morning, with a maximum temperature of 5°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -12° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
