Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to watch for unstable snow remaining in certain terrains. Although the clumps of new snow are well on their way to stabilization, caution is still needed in the following two slopes. One is wind slabs that have formed on slopes where the terrain is not shaped to support snowpack. The other is unstable snow remaining on extreme terrain features. The mountain is expected to be crowded today. While looking for no-track slopes, be careful not to enter slopes where unstable snow remains. At lower elevations, be alert for the possibility of glide cracks being hidden by new snow and loose snow avalanches due to high daytime temperatures and solar radiation. If snowballs begin to roll across the snow surface, it is a sign that the snow is losing strength. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 22), a number of size 2-3.5 slab avalanches were observed on the eastern slopes at elevations between 2,000 and 2,700 m. All of these avalanches occurred during stormy weather. In addition, a size 1 wet loose snow avalanche was observed on a steep slope exposed to strong solar radiation during the day.

Snowpack

The storm snow (19th-21st) is settling steadily. No significant fragility has been observed within this new snow. Around the ridge and along the sides of the ridge, where there is strong wind exposure, the snowpack has been scraped away, exposing a hard snow surface. On the leeward side, wind slabs have formed, and there is soft new snow where the wind has little influence. On lower elevation, sunny slopes, crusts have formed due to yesterday's fine weather.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sunny from midday, and a high of 8°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -6.9 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and 2 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
