Watch for storm slabs formed by future snowfall. Beware of triggering on steep slopes with few trees or where the slope changes abruptly. Beware of "terrain traps" such as gullys and cliffs, where even small avalanches that occur can cause significant damage. Also, remember that a good slope to ski is the "avalanche terrain" itself. Remember the basics: ski one person at a time, move from safe zone to safe zone, and those in the safe zone should monitor the skiers.
Watch for increased snowfall in the future.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday, but the number of observations was low.
At higher elevations, strong westerly winds last night may have caused snow movement, resulting in the formation of localized wind slabs on downwind slopes. Snowfall, which began at midnight, is expected to continue to increase on southerly slopes and at elevations below 1,200 m with 10-20 cm on top of crusts.
As of 4:00 p.m., 3 cm of snow had fallen over the past 24 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara, with snow falling in the surrounding areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies and snow late at night in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture due to a winter pressure pattern and the influence of a pressure trough and moist air.
