Watch for sudden changes in slope, and for induced storm slab on ridge lines, just below branch ridges, and on steep slopes with few trees. Sunny forecast. If snowballs begin to roll on steep slopes in the sun, it is a sign that the snowpack is losing strength. Be aware of the possibility of wet snow avalanches from large steep slopes. Beware of "terrain traps" such as gullys and cliffs, where even small outbreak avalanches can cause significant damage. Also, remember that a good slope to ski is the "avalanche terrain itself. Remember the basics: one skier at a time, moving from safe zone to safe zone, and those in the safe zone monitoring the skiers.
Need to be careful at higher elevations where bonding is difficult to advance.
Several natural and human-triggered slab avalanche sizes 1-1.5 were observed yesterday on steep slopes in the tree line.
Due to the stormy weather since the 25th, wind-driven snowfall of about 60-80 cm is on the crust on the southerly slopes and on the well-settled old snow on the northerly slopes in areas with heavy snowfall. Although no significant vulnerability has been reported at the interface with the old snow, poor bonding within the snowfall during the storm and multiple slab avalanches were reported yesterday, so caution should be exercised, especially at higher elevations where bonding is less likely to occur.
As of 4:00 p.m., 16 cm of snow had fallen over the past 24 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara, and the JMA is forecasting clear skies due to a high-pressure system.
