In Alpine, watch out for unstable slabs that remain on very steep slopes. High daytime temperatures and strong solar radiation can significantly alter the snow on the snowpack surface layer today. When snowballs begin to form, it is a sign that the snow on the snowpack surface layer has lost enough strength. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily scoop even a small loose snow avalanche. Also, be on the lookout for glide avalanches at lower elevations. If you are passing through deep gully terrain at the end of your tour, it is necessary to consider that the flanked areas with glide cracks are very high hazard. Please move quickly, and please devise a way to move so that you do not stagnate at the bottom of that slope. The mountains will take on a spring look at once. Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses. Have a good day.
Be wary of slab stiffness loss on slopes exposed to strong sunny slopes.
Note high daytime temperatures and strong solar radiation.
Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks.
Yesterday (February 27), several snowballs were observed on the southern slope of the below treeline.
Stormy snow has settled and wind slab instability remains on Alpine's very steep slopes. Significant temperature increases are forecast for today, and southerly winds will enter the area. Be alert for rapid snow changes on sunny slopes.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, westerly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 14°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3° (as of 4:45 a.m.).
