Travel and Terrain Advice

Continuing from yesterday, it is a spring day. Slopes that were hard and icy in the morning will lose strength as the temperature rises and the sunny slopes take hold. Be sure to notice the changes. Wet snow is very heavy, so don't let your guard down just because it is small. Also, on the ridge tops where the wind is strong, there are areas where old, hard Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed, so be very alert for slips and falls. Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks. In the adjacent Myoko mountain area, several size 2 glide avalanches were reported yesterday. If you are passing through deep gully terrain at the end of your tour, you should consider the flanked areas with glide cracks to be highly hazardous. Please move quickly, and please be creative in your moves so that you do not stagnate at the bottom of that slope. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 28), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed on steep, sunny slopes Below Treeline.

Snowpack

Yesterday, a temperature of 13.1°C was recorded at 3 pm at AMeDAS Hakuba. Due to the strong solar radiation, the snow surface layer Below Treeline was sufficiently wet and lost its strength. Currently, the snow is freezing due to radiative cooling, but high temperatures are forecast for the daytime again today, so we need to pay attention to the snow changes. We are also observing the expansion of glide cracks. Despite the very high temperatures yesterday, there is still some dry snow on the north side near the Treeline. The snow on the north side is well settled.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, cloudy in the evening, partly cloudy in the late evening, rain, and a high of 16°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.3°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
