Travel and Terrain Advice

Continuing from yesterday, it is a spring day. Slopes that were hard and icy in the morning will lose strength as the temperature rises and the sunny slopes take hold. Be sure to notice the changes. Wet snow is very heavy, so don't let your guard down just because it is small. A "terrain trap" below you can be deadly. Also, stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks in them. Even though the snow surface is frozen, there was a sufficient amount of thawing water yesterday and the strength of the lower part of the snowpack remains reduced. If you are passing through deep gully terrain at the end of your tour, you should consider the glide-cracked areas on its flanks to be highly hazardous. Please move quickly, and please be creative in your moves so that you do not stagnate at the bottom of that slope. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 28), several size 2 glide avalanches were observed and reported Below Treeline. Numerous snowballs were also reported.

Snowpack

Yesterday's high temperatures and strong solar radiation wet the snow Below Treeline and caused it to lose its strength. The surface snow is now frozen due to radiative cooling, but high daytime temperatures are forecast again today, so we need to watch for changes in the snow. Expansion of glide cracks has also been observed. On the other hand, there is enough settled and dry snow in the north near the Treeline.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later, west, clear, later, cloudy, night, rain, and high temperatures of 16° (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3° (as of 4:45 a.m.).
