Snowfall amounts are still low, but watch out for storm slabs that will be forming at higher elevations. The bonding of new and old snow needs to be checked. The weather is forecast to become more windy and snowy with a winter pressure pattern. Be on the lookout for changes in wind direction and speed, and the resulting snow movement. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to recognize hazards above you. Using a terrain map, it is important to consider whether there are any large start zones above you. On the other hand, at lower elevations, the danger of glide avalanches continues. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Also, leftover snow blocks and other fallen snow blocks are very unstable.
Stay away from areas where glide cracks are already open or where unstable snow blocks remain.
Yesterday (March 1), several size 2 glide avalanches were observed on the south slope of the below treeline. Numerous snowballs and loose snow avalanches were also observed.
The high temperatures and clear skies since the day before yesterday have made the snowpack surface layer Below Treeline wet enough to lose its strength. This has resulted in glide avalanches and wet loose snow avalanches. Due to the high temperatures again this morning, the risk of glide avalanches at very low elevations should continue. On the other hand, at higher elevations, snow has been falling since dawn with southwesterly winds. In the upper treeline, 10-15 cm of snow had fallen by morning. This new snow is on wet or frozen snow surfaces, depending on elevation. Please check the bonding of the new snow with the old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, later slightly stronger, rain or snow, and a maximum temperature of 7°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 0° (as of 4:45 a.m.).
