This is a day of heightened avalanche conditions in certain terrain. Be alert for unstable slabs that form on the leeward side of the ridge and on the flanks of the branch ridges. It is important that the terrain is simple enough to support a snowpack and that you choose slopes with gentle slopes. Today is a great day to enjoy pleasant powder snow under wonderful weather. However, please communicate with your companions so that your exuberance does not disrupt your decision-making and lead you into more hazardous slopes. Continue to follow a principled course of action, stopping at safe spots and skiing one person at a time. This will reduce the number of accidents that may occur. Have a good day.
Watch for slabs formed with west winds. Also, large start zones that open to the south are more at risk from daytime temperatures and solar radiation.
Yesterday (March 2) there was a size 1.5-2 glide avalanche in a lower elevation area where it rained in the morning. There are no reports of avalanche occurrences at higher elevations. Shooting cracks and slab avalanches have been reported in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains area.
The 30-50 cm of snow that began falling yesterday is on Melt-Freeze crusts or settling snow. This new snow is under the influence of very strong westerly winds and is forming slabs on the downwind side. The snowfall ended last night, but the instability of this new snow remains in some places in a state induced by a single human stimulus.
