Snow on south-facing slopes is repeatedly melt-freezing and changing to spring conditions. High daytime temperatures and solar radiation have reduced the snowpack strength, and the wet avalanches that occur should be watched out for. On the other hand, there is well-settled dry snow on the northern slopes at higher elevations, but beware of wind slabs that remain on terrain pockets. There is more and more hard old snow exposed on the ridge tops and other areas where the wind is strong. Be on the lookout for slips and falls. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen. Have a good day.

Several snow block collapses were reported yesterday (March 4). There were also reports of

Stormy snow has settled well enough. Wind slabs remain in terrain pockets at higher elevations, and wet snow avalanches occur at lower elevations. No significant instability has been observed below the mid-level of snowpack.
Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, northerly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 9° (at 13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
