This is a "spring day" when slopes that are hard frozen in the morning lose strength due to high daytime temperatures and sunny slopes, resulting in loose snow avalanches caused by wet snow. Try to notice situations where the snow surface loses strength. Wet snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoop underfoot. A "terrain trap" lower down the slope can have serious consequences. Also, very hard old snow is exposed on the ridge tops and other areas. Be careful of slipping and falling. Slopes with glide cracks at lower elevations are unstable. Watch out for leftover snow blocks on cliff-like terrain. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen and have a good spring day.
Beware of high daytime temperatures and the effects of solar radiation
Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks. Be wary of snow blocks in cliff-like terrain.
Yesterday (March 5), many wet loose snow avalanches were observed in all aspects at very low elevations.
Yesterday, high temperatures were recorded at 6.1°C (14:00) at AMeDAS Sekiyama. This, combined with strong solar radiation, caused numerous loose snow avalanches Below Treeline. Hard old snow is exposed on the ridge tops. On the north side of the higher elevations, the snow is still dry. As of yesterday, the snow surface was in good condition with dryout occurring where moisture is being removed by radiation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, northerly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 11°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
