Steep solar aspects at low elevations are the most likely place for glide avalanches to occur and should be avoided until temperatures drop. Look for the best snow on polar slopes or take advantage of the spring diurnal cycle to find corn skiing at upper elevations. Cornices remain a hazard will become unstable with the continued warm weather - avoid travel on or below cornices. Travellling conditions are challenging in most parts of the mountain so ski or ride cautiously to avoid the many hidden hazards.
Loose wet avalanches will continue to run on steep slopes particularly during the warmest times of the day and when the sun is out.
Warm temps and sunny skies are melting the surface snow causing it to percolate down through the snowpack lubricating the base causing full depth glide avalanches to become possible. Glide avalanches are difficult to predict and more likely to occur naturally than as a result of human triggers.
Glide cracks have been opening up across the region and a full depth glide avalanche occured on the steep slopes of Haru no taki yesterday (March 6). A fatal avalanche occurred on the South side of Yotei at low elevation on March 5. No additional information is currently available.
The surface snow is now well settled on polar aspects and has been going through a spring diurnal melt / refreeze process on solar aspects. Last night however temps remained above zero up to 700m limiting the amount of re-freezing at low elevations.
Overcast skies this morning will give way to a sunny afternoon. Winds will be light from the SSW gusting to moderate at upper elevations. The freezing level will rise to 1150m today before dropping back to 700m overnight. Tomorrow (wednesday) will start with broken skies before clouds roll into the region in the afternoon with some light rain to the Treeline and BTL elevation bands while the alpine will see light flurries with minimal accumulations.
