In the Below Treeline, this is a day to be very alert for avalanches caused by wet snow. Even if the snow is hard and frozen in the morning, as the snow loses strength due to solar radiation and temperature, loose snow avalanches will begin to occur. As you walk, notice changes in snow intensity. Also, pay attention not only to the snow under your feet, but also to any steep slopes above you. Avalanches of wet snow are very heavy and even small ones can cause injury. If there are "terrain traps" below the slope, the consequences can be serious. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. When passing under them, move quickly, leaving plenty of space between you and your companions. It is going to be a very hot day. Sun protection and more drinks are needed. Have a good day.
Watch for large open slopes to the south. Possible triggering is as of morning. Watch for high daytime temperatures and solar radiation effects.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Yesterday (March 7), several size 2 glide avalanches were observed below treeline.
Snow accumulation is a springtime Melt-Freeze cycle. The snow cover surface layer freezes hard in the morning and loses strength due to high temperatures and solar radiation during the daytime, which is repeated. Yesterday, the strength was relatively preserved due to the wind, but today, the temperature will be significantly higher, which will cause a quick loss of strength. Glide cracks are also reported to be expanding.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, westerly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 20°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
