The mountain conditions are spring conditions. Slopes that were hard and frozen in the morning lose strength by noon due to rising temperatures and sunny slopes, causing wet loose snow avalanches. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. Be on the lookout for slides on frozen slopes in the morning and wet snow avalanches from noon. On the large steep south-facing slopes, conditions are such that large scale loose snow avalanches can occur, so be vigilant above yourself. At lower elevations, snowmelt is also advancing from the bottom of the snowpack. Snow bridges are more likely to collapse, so please pay attention to areas where the snow has lost strength, even on the way down the mountain. The weather slowly worsening. Take adequate sun protection and have a good day.
Be aware of high daytime temperatures and the effects of solar radiation. Also consider the influence of southerly winds. Possible triggering is as of the morning.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Also be wary of snow blocks on cliffs and very steep slopes.
Yesterday (March 8), several wet loose snow avalanches were observed Below Treeline.
Yesterday, extremely high temperatures were recorded at 17.2°C (14:00) at AMeDAS Sekiyama. This, combined with strong solar radiation, resulted in loose snow avalanches below treeline. On the northern slopes at higher elevations, the snow is still dry.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, daytime, north winds, clear, nighttime, cloudy, and a maximum temperature of 19°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 0° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
