The avalanche danger level announced is as of the morning (current conditions). Avalanche danger levels increase with rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day. Notice how the hard, frozen snow surface in the morning gradually thaws, gets wetter, and loses its strength. Wet snow point avalanches can become very dangerous if the slope is large and steep enough, increasing in size as they drift down. Pay particular attention to large south-facing slopes. Glide cracks and associated glide avalanche hazards are also gradually increasing in elevation. Weather is slowly descending. Have a good day.
Note high daytime temperatures and solar radiation.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Yesterday (March 11), size 1 glide avalanches and new glide cracks were observed Below Treeline. In addition, numerous wet loose snow avalanches were observed on south-facing slopes.
The new snow (about 10 cm) that fell in the alpine areas the day before yesterday has settled. As of yesterday, it was observed that on some slopes, new snow and old snow were not fully bonding, but this will not be a major problem today. There was no wind in Alpine yesterday. Therefore, the high temperatures and solar radiation had a stronger impact on the snow surface, and even in alpine areas, loose snow avalanches were observed on the steep slopes facing south. At lower elevations, snowmelt is progressing and snowpack intensity is decreasing.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds and cloudy skies, with occasional sunshine until late afternoon, and a high of 21°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.2°C (as of 5:00). Yesterday, at Amedas Hakuba, a maximum temperature of 17°C was recorded (at 13:00).
