The avalanche danger level announced is as of the morning (current conditions). Avalanche danger levels increase with rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day. Notice how the hard, frozen snow surface in the morning gradually thaws, gets wetter, and loses its strength. Wet snow point avalanches can become very dangerous if the slope is large and steep enough, increasing in size as they drift down. Pay particular attention to large south-facing slopes. Glide cracks and associated glide avalanche hazards are also gradually increasing in elevation. Weather is slowly descending. Have a good day.
Yesterday (March 11), a wet loose snow avalanche or snow block collapse was reported.
No information has been received regarding the new snow that fell in the alpine areas the day before yesterday. However, based on information from the nearby Hakuba Mountains area, it seems safe to assume that new snow is settling. Due to the high temperatures and strong sunshine, the snowpack is wet enough up to the higher elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, later, slightly stronger, sunny, sometimes cloudy, with a maximum temperature of 22°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 2° (as of 4:45 a.m.).
