It is a "spring day" with snowpack intensity decreasing during the day. However, today is a day of a struggle between these two forces: a cold north wind that takes heat away from the snow surface, and a decrease in snow cover intensity due to rising temperatures and solar radiation. Please monitor the changes in the strength of the snowpack surface layer carefully. Snow is melting at lower elevations, and areas that were passable in February may have broken up or the ground is exposed. In such places, it is easy to relax with upward caution. Watch out for glide avalanches and snow block collapses.
Keep in mind daytime temperatures and solar radiation
Recent rainfall and high temperatures have caused melting water.
A size 1 loose snow avalanche was reported yesterday (March 13). Information is limited due to the low number of people entering the mountain.
Yesterday morning (March 13), rain fell at the foot of the mountain and snow fell at higher elevations. Based on the amount of precipitation, it is estimated that there was about 5-10 cm of new snow at the Treeline. Please check the bonding of new snow and old snow. A northerly wind is forecasted to blow in today, and temperatures are not expected to rise much. However, once the sunny slopes begin to penetrate the southern slopes, the intensity of the snowpack is expected to rapidly decrease.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sunny before noon, and a high of 12°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.3°C (as of 5:00).
