This is a "spring cycle" where snow cover intensity varies greatly between morning and mid-day. Climbers and skiers alike should be aware of slip drops in the morning. And notice that the higher temperatures and solar radiation reduce the strength of the snow cover surface layer. If you choose the right time of day and the right slope, you can safely enjoy comfortable corn snow. On the other hand, in alpine areas, the recent snowfall has not yet completely settled in isolated terrain features. Please take this into account when choosing routes and running lines. Melting of snow at lower elevations is progressing. Please be on the lookout for snow blocks falling from the sides of forest roads. Have a good day.
Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Also, be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks.
Note the effects of high daytime temperatures and solar radiation. Assessment is as of morning.
Yesterday (March 20), numerous loose snow avalanches (size 1-1.5) were observed on very steep, sunny slopes. In addition, a slab avalanche (size 1) was observed in the alpine area.
Wet snow avalanches are observed during the day on slopes where the effects of sunny slopes and temperatures are strong. On the other hand, smaller slab avalanches have been observed at isolated terrains where the following conditions apply. Slab formation on higher elevations, shaded slopes, and wind-affected snow. On the southern slopes, the snowpack is isothermalizing to near the treeline. Spring is coming to higher elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the south, north winds during the day, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 20°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
