Be alert for glide avalanches in the Treeline and Below Treeline. Even if the rain stops, it is necessary to consider that the risk of glide avalanche continues to be high. Do not enter such slopes, even if they are small glide cracks. Also, do not stay below slopes with glide cracks. Rain-washed, corn snow may be easier to ski because dirt is washed away from the snow surface. If you choose the right slope and the right time of day, such runs can be possible. At the same time, however, there are certain hazards in certain terrain features, such as gully cracks, collapsing snow blocks, and wet loose snow avalanches. Safety depends on your "slope selection".
Do not let your guard down even if the rain stops.
Yesterday (March 23), few people entered the mountain and no new avalanche reports were received.
The warmer weather continues to reduce the overall intensity of the snowpack, especially at lower elevations. This has been combined with rainfall (20 mm) with southwesterly winds since last night. Even though the rain has stopped, large amounts of meltwater continue to melt snow within the snowpack. Consider the glide avalanche danger to remain high and continuing.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, rain until dawn, and a high of 16°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 11.6°C (as of 5:00 am). Yesterday, a high of 15.9°C (at 12:00) was recorded at Amedas Hakuba, and the temperature has remained near 10°C until this morning.
