Be alert for glide avalanches in the treeline and below treeline. Even if the rain stops, it is necessary to consider that the risk of glide avalanche continues to be high. Be especially vigilant in the seaward areas of the Myoko Mountains, where rainfall is heavy. And do not enter such slopes, even if they are small glide cracks. Also, do not stay below slopes with glide cracks. Granular snow washed by rain may make it easier to ski, as dirt is washed away from the snow surface. With the right slope and time of day, such runs can be possible. At the same time, however, there are certain hazards in certain areas, such as gully cracks, collapsing snow blocks, and loose snow avalanches of wet snow. Safety depends on your "slope selection".
Do not let your guard down even if the rain stops.
Yesterday (March 23), few people entered the mountain and no new avalanche reports were received.
The warmer weather continues to reduce the overall intensity of the snowpack, especially at lower elevations. This is combined with rainfall accompanied by southwesterly winds since last night. Rainfall has been heaviest in areas north of Myoko and closer to the ocean. Even if the rain stops in the future, the large amount of meltwater continues to melt snow within the snowpack. Consider that the risk of glide avalanche remains high and continues.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, slightly stronger, then northerly winds, rain, cloudy in the evening, and a high of 13°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 8° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
