The season is progressing quickly and snowmelt is evident at lower elevations. Plan your activities with the expectation that the descent routes that were possible during the season may not be available. At higher elevations, be on the lookout for slip drops on frozen slopes in the morning. Glide cracks occur where the slope changes significantly. If you are on a slope where you cannot see what lies ahead, do not ski into the slope suddenly, but pause in a position where you can afford to do so and check what lies ahead. Snow is also breaking up on the ridge and just off the ridge. Climbers should not think that they are safe because they are on the ridge. Glide avalanches and snow block collapses are difficult phenomena to estimate the degree of irritation they may cause. Avoidance from hazardous elements should be considered first.
A size 1 glide avalanche was observed yesterday (March 24).
High temperatures and yesterday's rainfall have contributed to the snowmelt. At elevations near 1,000 m, the snow depth has decreased by more than 20 cm over the past two days. This has resulted in the widening of glide cracks and the development of cracks in the snowpack, which is typical of the snowmelt season, even on relatively gentle slopes. Although temperatures are somewhat cooler than in the past few days, the intensity of the snowpack is decreasing, and therefore, we must continue to be vigilant for glide avalanches in the treeline and below treeline areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northeasterly winds, northerly winds, cloudy and partly rainy, with a maximum temperature of 11°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 1° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
