Climbers and skiers alike should be on the lookout for slip drops on icy slopes in the morning. During the day, be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your feet. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be severe. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Please be wise and assess the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. The danger of glide avalanches continues and cracks have been reported in new locations. Keep a good distance from such slopes.
Keep your distance from slopes with glide cracks.
Be careful of steep slopes with strong solar radiation effects during the day. Rating is as of morning.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (March 26) due to poor weather conditions and limited mountaineering activity. In the adjacent Hakuba mountain area, a glide avalanche on the northeast slope of the below treeline and a snow block collapse on the slope of a forest road were observed.
In the 24 hours through this morning, about 30 mm of rain fell in the northern areas near the sea and about 15 mm in the southern areas, resulting in a well-wetted snowpack. For a short period of time early in the morning, a winter pressure pattern caused temperatures to drop and the snowpack surface to freeze. There was some snowfall in the high alpine areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, then southerly winds, cloudy and sunny in the evening, with a maximum temperature of 12°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
