Climbers and skiers alike should be on the lookout for slip drops on icy slopes in the morning. During the day, be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your feet. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be serious. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Please be smart about the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. The danger of glide avalanches continues. Keep a good distance from such slopes. Have a good day.
Beware of steep slopes that receive a lot of sunlight. Rating is as of morning.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (March 27). A size 1 loose snow avalanche was reported in the alpine area of the adjacent Hakuba mountain range. This was caused by snow that fell early yesterday morning.
The new snow that fell slightly at higher elevations was wet as of yesterday. Below 2,000 m elevation, the snow surface layer up to about 30 cm has become sufficiently wet due to previous rainfall. This has created conditions conducive to the formation of loose snow avalanches. Glide cracks have also been observed in alpine areas in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains. It is necessary to consider that similar snowpack conditions exist in the Myoko mountain area.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, north winds during the day, cloudy, sunny before noon, and a maximum temperature of 12°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
