Climbers and skiers alike should be on the lookout for slip drops on icy slopes in the morning. During the day, be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your feet. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be severe. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Please be smart about the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. The danger of glide avalanches continues and cracks have been reported at higher elevations. Keep a good distance from such slopes. Have a good day.
Note high daytime temperatures and sunny slopes. Rating is as of morning.
Yesterday (March 28), a snow block collapse was reported Below Treeline. In the adjacent Hakuba Mountain area, several wet loose snow avalanches (size 1-1.5) and wet slab avalanches (size 2) were observed on slopes below 1,800 m elevation, possibly originating from the day before yesterday.
The mountains are changing to corn snow, except for some slopes on the north side of High Alpine. This is the "spring cycle" of freezing in the morning and then melting during the day. Glide cracks are also occurring below treeline elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the south, north winds during the day, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 13°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
