Climbers and skiers alike should be on the lookout for slip drops on icy slopes in the morning. During the day, be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your feet. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be severe. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Be smart about the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. If you choose the right elevation, direction, and time of day, you can enjoy comfortable corn snow runs. Glide avalanche danger continues and cracks have been reported at higher elevations. Keep a good distance from such slopes. Have a good day.
Note high daytime temperatures and sunny slopes. Rating is as of morning.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (March 29).
The "spring cycle" continues, with the snow surface melting during the day due to high temperatures and strong solar radiation, and then freezing at night. The entire snowpack is also isothermalizing, with the middle to lower layers shifting to higher intensity. Snow is melting at lower elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the north, and clear skies with a maximum temperature of 19°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.5°C (as of 5:00). Yesterday, at Amedas Hakuba, a maximum temperature of 11.8°C (at 12:00) was recorded.
