Temperatures are forecast to be significantly higher than yesterday. Be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your footing. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be severe. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Be smart about the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. If you choose the right elevation, direction, and time of day, you can enjoy comfortable granular snow runs. Glide avalanche danger continues and cracks have been reported at higher elevations. Keep a good distance from such slopes. Have a good day.
Note high daytime temperatures and sunny slopes. Rating is as of morning.
Few people entered the mountain yesterday (March 30) and no new avalanches were reported.
The "spring cycle" continues, with the snow surface melting during the day due to high temperatures and strong solar radiation, and then freezing at night. The entire snowpack is also isothermalizing, with the middle to lower layers shifting to higher intensity. Snow is melting at lower elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, northwesterly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 21°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 0° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
