Travel and Terrain Advice

Climbers and skiers alike should watch out for slips and fall on icy slopes. During the day, be on the lookout for avalanches of wet snow on sunny slopes. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily trap your feet. If there are "terrain traps" lower down the slope, the consequences can be serious. At lower elevations, the snow has melted to the point where it is difficult to ski. Be smart about the terrain in elevation zones where there is sufficient snow cover. If you choose the right elevation, direction, and time of day, you can enjoy comfortable gliding on corn snow. Glide cracks are expanding even at higher elevations. If you are on a slope where you cannot see ahead, please stop and check your safety. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (March 31), a size 1.5 snow block collapse was reported.

Snowpack

The "spring cycle" continues, with the snow surface melting during the day due to high temperatures and strong solar radiation, and then freezing at night. The entire snowpack is also isothermalizing, with the middle to lower layers shifting to higher strength. Glide cracks are also expanding at treeline elevations.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, daytime winds from the north, and a maximum temperature of 17°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 1° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
