The snowpack is increasing in intensity, but the lack of snow is limiting activities in areas Below Treeline, which in previous years could be used as a stormy weather plan. When visibility is poor and situational awareness is hampered by poor visibility, we recommend that you do not force yourself to gain elevation and enjoy the area in a controlled area.
Since last evening, the wind has changed to a southwest wind in the Alpine area. Watch for new wind slab formation.
Yesterday, several size 1-3 slab avalanches, likely spontaneous during the storm, were observed above the Treeline.
The snowpack brought about by a series of stormy weather conditions has been settling steadily and increasing in strength. Yesterday, due to the morning sunshine, a Melt-Freeze layer was formed on the surface of the snow cover on the sunlit slopes below the tree line. On top of this, another 10 cm of snow has been added by the snowfall that began again before dawn.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that on the 25th, high pressure will prevail, but the area will be affected by a pressure trough and cold air in the sky. As a result, it is forecast to be cloudy and sometimes sunny in the northern part of the country, with some snow and rain. A maximum temperature of 7°C (418 m elevation) is forecast. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 750m), the temperature is -2.1℃ (as of 5:00), with 6cm of new snow.
