Travel and Terrain Advice

Conditions continue to be shallow snowpack. Especially in lower elevation areas, slopes that appear to be snow covered and easy to ski on may actually be terrain where snow is carried and accumulated by the wind. In other words, it may be where wind slabs are most likely to form. When considering whether or not to use a slope, it might be a good idea to consider why the area has snow on it.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday, there were many spontaneous slab avalanches of size 1.5 mainly on south-facing slopes in the alpine area. There were also several extremely large slab avalanches of size 3-3.5 on east to southeast facing slopes near the ridge and in the higher elevation alpine areas.

Snowpack

The snowpack brought about by yesterday's early morning snowfall has settled well. Thin crusts have formed on the sunlit slope surfaces at lower elevations. Higher elevation areas are under the influence of strong westerly winds, which have been continuing since yesterday, and are redistributing the snow.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that the area will be covered by high pressure, but will be affected by cold air. As a result, it is forecast to be cloudy and sometimes sunny in the northern part of the country from midday until late afternoon, with some snow and rainfall mainly along the mountains and in the Nakano Iiyama area. The maximum daytime temperature is 5°C (418 m elevation). At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 1.2°C (as of 5:00). No snowfall since last night at the foot of the mountain.
