Generally safe avalanche conditions, but watch out for wind slabs in isolated terrain features. Combined with terrain traps such as bushes, rocks, and gullies, even small avalanches can have deadly consequences. Always check the terrain as well as the snow conditions. There are many areas at lower elevations that have not yet been covered, and if you lose elevation too easily, you may be asked to climb back up. Allow plenty of time.
Even a small avalanche can lead to serious injury if there are bushes or other obstacles in the track. Be alert for terrain traps.
No brand new avalanches were observed yesterday.
Strong westerly winds up to the day before yesterday blew the snowpack on the ridges in the alpine zone to the leeward side, forming wind slabs. Due to low temperatures and clear skies since early last morning, the snow cover surface was strongly affected by radiation and faceting progressed. On top of this, snowfall since early this morning has brought a snow accumulation of about 5-10 cm. That snow accumulation is moving to the leeward side due to strong westerly winds in the alpine zone.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting high pressure over the area, but some areas will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. As a result, it is forecast to be cloudy and sunny from before noon, with some rain showers until morning, and snow at higher elevations. The maximum daytime temperature is 8°C (418 m elevation). At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 0.4°C (as of 5:00). Snowfall since last night is 2 cm.
