Conditions are improving and the snowpack is developing however there are some layers within the recent storm snow that may be reactive in specific areas. Early season hazards continue to persist.
A size 1.5 Skier accidental windslab avalanche was reported on an East slope at treeline on Dec. 28th, most likely failing on the Dec. 25th solar crust. Some loose dry activity has also been reported on steeps slopes in the past couple of days.
Mild temps and mostly dry weather over the past few days has allowed the snowpack to settle and strengthen. There are some buried solar crusts in some parts of the zone and a new crust developed on the surface yesterday on South and East aspects. 2-5cms of new snow has fallen overnight on this crust.
A weak low pressure passing to Hokkaido`s South is drawing in a Northerly flow. Temps will be mild today before dropping tonight and remaining cool tomorrow. Overcast skies today will give way to light flurries this evening with heavier snowfall expected on Sunday. Winds are light from the North today and tomorrow before increasing to moderate tomorrow afternoon.
