Note the instability of wind slabs that remain on isolated terrain. Below Treeline, there is less snow cover and the terrain is not filled in. There are many non-avalanche hazards, such as holes in gully bottoms and bushs, so be careful when setting your route. Management of avalanche hazards caused by earthquakes is the same behavioral habit that you are always aware of. These include minimizing the time and number of people entering avalanche terrain, and always considering whether there is a large start zone above you.
No new avalanche observations were reported yesterday. On the other hand, multiple avalanches, presumably caused by the Noto Peninsula earthquake on January 1, were observed in the Alpine area. The avalanche size was 2-3.5. In addition, many snowpack cracks caused by the earthquake were observed near Treeline, even on gentle slopes where avalanches do not occur.
The instability in the stormy snow so far is slowly moving toward stabilization. Yesterday's observations indicate that there are still areas that have not yet gained sufficient strength, so human-triggered avalanche is possible in areas such as extreme terrain where the terrain does not support the very steep slope. In addition, wind slabs are forming in areas of higher elevation than Treeline, influenced by strong westerly winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the north, cloudy, night, rain or snow, and a high of 9 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 5:00 am), with no new snowfall in the past 24 hours.
