Please keep an eye on the bonding of the new snow with the old snow. It is also important to observe how the new snow up to this morning is being moved by the wind and where it is forming slabs. Because the terrain near the TL (treeline) is not fully filled in, there are obstacles present within the slope. These elements can be "terrain traps," so even a small avalanche can have serious consequences. Due to the recent earthquake, it has been observed that the snowpack is cracking in areas where it would not normally crack (e.g., on ridges and gentle slopes). Remember that this could be hidden by new snow.
Check the strength of the interface between new and old snow.
No new avalanches were observed yesterday.
Snow from previous stormy weather has settled further and is in the process of stabilizing. Melt-Freeze crusts (formed by the good weather on January 2) are present on the sunny slopes and have been buried by the snowfall since dawn. New snow up to this morning has been about 10 cm upper part of BTL (Below Treeline) and is accumulating under the influence of west winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow or rain, midday, cloudy, then sunny, with a high of 6 °C (418 m) for northern Nagano Prefecture. Snowfall of 15 cm is forecast in the next 24 hours. At the AMeDAS station in Hakuba (703 m), the temperature is 0.8 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with light snowfall.
