New snow and winds strong enough to transport the new snow and create windslab on lee slopes in the alpine and tree-line.
New snow has fallen across the forecasted region and the potential for storm slab. The storm slab depth, sensitivity and risk will dpend on the zone and will need caution and assessment.
There has been enough new snow in the last 24hrs for concern of windslab avalanches in alpine and treeline zones and stormslab avalanches below tree-line. The depth and structure of these concerns will depend on how much snow fell and with what strength of wind in the area.
From new years day, the snow pack had time to settle and heal, however the recent snow, starting Jan 5 will take time to bond to the settled snow. Surface hoar was found on Jan 4th and will need assessment for it could be buried under yesterdays snowfall.
It has been a mix of weather this week with cold clear nights and warmer sunny days and snow storm conditions with moderate to strong winds at tree-line and above. Overall the weather has been favorable for a solid snowpack, but more snow is in the forecast and will be interesting to see with what temperature the snow falls and how dense the new snow becomes.
