Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to be aware of the instability that remains in certain terrains. Although the weather will be favorable, it is a good idea to start the day by checking snow conditions on smaller slopes rather than suddenly entering larger slopes. On steep slopes, the rising temperatures and solar radiation during the day can cause the surface snow to become more slab-like and destabilizing. Keep an eye out for changes in snowpack conditions. Below Tree Line, yesterday's heavy snowfall hides many hazardous elements (holes in stream bottoms, lower branches of trees, etc.). Be on the lookout for "terrain traps." Have a good day and follow a principled course of action, making good use of safe terrain.

Be alert for wind slabs forming in terrain pockets near the main ridge. On steep slopes, watch out for changes in conditions due to the effects of solar radiation during the day.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were observed yesterday, partly due to poor visibility.

Snowpack

The snowfall that began on January 6 ended around noon yesterday, bringing about 80 cm of new snow in the upper part of Bellow Tree Line. The new snow is on top of the Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the sunny slopes on the 5th. No significant fragility has been observed at the interface between the new snow and crust, nor inside the new snow. However, the bonding has not yet sufficiently strengthened, so we need to be very vigilant where the snowpack is more prone to destabilization.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime high of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -14.6 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
