Pay attention to the intensity of snowfall during the day. There are Melt-Freeze crusts under the fresh snow that can easily become bed surfaces. The tree line is not yet fully covered with snow. The gully is not filled, and there are numerous bushes on slopes that would be comfortable in a normal season. As a result, route setting is difficult and requires experience.
Note the intensity of snowfall during the day.
Yesterday (January 9), a size 2 avalanche caused by the collapse of a cornice was observed on the eastern slope near 2,300 m elevation.
The snow from the recent stormy weather (January 6 night to 8 noon) is settling well. New snow from this morning is on Melt-Freeze crusts on the south side and on wind slabs on the north side at higher elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow or rain, and daytime highs of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. Snowfall has already begun at higher elevations, with 15 cm in the northern part of the avalanche bulletin area at around 1,000 m elevation. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
