Travel and Terrain Advice

Avoid large convexities, terrains of extreme shape, or slopes of a shape that will not support a snowpack. Also, beware of "terrain traps" where even a small avalanche can have deadly consequences. Streams in the forest are not yet well filled and numerous bushes are out. Please use careful route setting.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanche observations have been reported.

Snowpack

With the passage of the pressure trough, the snowfall that began early in the morning of the 10th brought 15-20 cm of new snow near the treeline. This new snow is on top of the Melt-Freeze crust on the south face. The previous storm snow (January 6 to 8 noon) is slowly stabilizing, but has not yet reached a high enough density to make it very deep once skiers and snowboarders take off their skis or snowboards.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime and northerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime maximum temperature of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.) and 6 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.
