This is a day of difficult avalanche conditions. In the treeline and alpine, the snowpack has the potential for large avalanches if triggered, even though the probability of occurrence is low. Be on the lookout for areas where wind driven snow has formed slabs. Also, remember that a likelihood of triggering changes during the day on steep slopes exposed to solar radiation. The overall topographic feature of the northern slope of Happo-one is a large "terrain trap". There are few safe zones, and on days when many people are crowding in, it can be a very difficult place to group manage. Pay attention to both above and below you. The forest is filling in, but not enough yet. Be aware of hazards hidden under fresh snow (e.g. holes in stream bottoms, lower branches of trees, etc.). Have a good day.
Northwest winds averaging 15 m/s are blowing on the main ridge line and moving snow. There is significant avalanche potential on the downwind side, especially on the northeast to east facing slopes.
On the northern slopes, there is a relatively low-density layer under this cohesive new snow, which is structurally weak. Also, on the south slope, the new snow is on top of the Melt-Freeze crust and has significant avalanche potential.
Yesterday (13th), a size 1 slab avalanche was reported in avalanche management at the ski resort. Size 1 storm slabs and loose snow avalanches have also been reported in the backcountry.
Snowfall began on the morning of the 12th and continued until the evening of the 13th. The total snowfall during the last 36 hours was 60-80 cm in the upper treeline. Westerly to northwesterly winds have been picking up since yesterday afternoon, moving large amounts of new snow to the leeward side.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime high of 4 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -14.9 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
