Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day when avalanche danger increases as the weather worsens. For inexperienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy the fresh snow from dawn in the ski resorts. Experienced groups should look for large start zones above them, even when in the forests. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice these things. Also, streams in the forest have not yet completely filled in. Details of yesterday's avalanche accident on the south slope of Happo One are still unknown. The attitude of avoiding easy talk about things that are not well known is the same as choosing terrain carefully when the snow conditions are not well known.

Avalanche Problem

Snowfall is accompanied by northerly winds averaging about 10-15 m/s on the main ridge line. Even at lower elevations, be vigilant on steep slopes where snow accumulates due to northerly winds.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (14th) was a beautiful day, and many size 1-2 storm slab avalanches were observed, likely occurring during the stormy weather. There were also some size 1 loose snow avalanches on the north side of the mountain on very steep slopes unaffected by the wind.

Snowpack

A new snowfall began around the change of date, with 30 cm of new snow by this morning in the upper part of the below treeline. We observed yesterday that there are areas of insufficient sintering in the lower layers of the snowpack that formed during the previous stormy cycle (from the morning of the 12th to the evening of the 13th). Here, new snow will be placed on top, so the potential for a large avalanche to occur remains ongoing.

Weather

The weather outlook is for a strong winter pressure pattern to gradually develop. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, mornings and evenings, snow, and daytime highs of 2 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.9 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and 10 cm of snow has fallen in the past 6 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Observatory, at 4:39 a.m. on the 15th, has forecast 40 cm of snowfall in the next 24 hours until 6:00 a.m. on the 16th, as information related to heavy snowfall.
