The mountain is in very dangerous avalanche conditions, so this is a good day to enjoy the fresh snow at a ski resort where safety controls are in place, followed by a visit to the hot springs. When skiing in the ski resort, please be sure to observe the areas where you are allowed to ski. It is for your safety and at the same time, it is extremely important for the safety of other guests. It is not a safe day in the backcountry, even in the forests. You need to identify start zones in the forests and act with the greatest margin of safety. If any incidents do occur, consider that, due to the severe weather conditions, outside help is not expected immediately.
Even below treeline, be vigilant in areas where the snow surface layer has a tendency to slab due to the wind. Even in localized start zones in the forest, avalanches can still occur.
Yesterday morning (15th), reports of numerous size 1 loose snow avalanches or size 1 storm slab avalanches were received from ski patrols in Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Cortina, and other ski resorts during morning avalanche control. Similar avalanche reports have also been received in the backcountry below treeline.
New snowfall since early morning of the 15th has reached 50-60 cm in the upper part of the below treeline. The dense new snowfall, influenced by the northwest winds until this morning, is on top of the low cohesion snow that was present until yesterday morning, and the snow surface layer has an "upside-down structure" in many places.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, and a daytime high of 0 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -6.1 °C (as of 5:00 pm), and 8 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Observatory, at 4:45 a.m. on the 16th, has forecast 40 cm of snowfall in 24 hours until 6:00 a.m. on the 17th, as information related to heavy snowfall.
