The mountain is in very dangerous avalanche conditions, so this is a good day to enjoy the fresh snow at a ski resort where safety controls are in place, followed by a visit to the hot springs. When skiing in the ski resort, please be sure to observe the areas where you are allowed to ski. It is for your safety and at the same time, it is extremely important for the safety of other guests. It is not a safe day in the backcountry, even in the forests. You need to identify start zones in the forest and act with the greatest margin of safety. If any incidents do occur, consider that, due to the severe weather conditions, outside help is not expected immediately.
Even below treeline, be vigilant in areas where the upper snowpack has a tendency to slab due to the wind. Even in isolated start zones in the forest, avalanches can still occur.
Yesterday (15th), the ski area safety control reported a number of avalanches on size 1 storm slabs. Backcountry has not received any information due to low numbers of people entering the mountain.
Snowfall, which began in the early morning hours of the 15th, has reached 50-80 cm below treeline. Since yesterday afternoon, the wind has also been particularly strong, and the upper snowpack has emerged in many places with an unstable "upside-down structure" where dense snow is placed on top.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slight northwesterly wind, then a slight westerly wind, snow, and a daytime high of 2 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 15 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 38 cm in the past 24 hours.
