At higher elevations where snowpack bonding is less likely to progress, be aware of wind slab bonding on extremely steep slopes just below ridgelines and branch ridges. Deep streams, cliffs, rocks, standing timber, and other "terrain traps" are exposed that can increase damage even if the size of the avalanche that occurs is small. Be careful of falling into gully. The forecast is for clear skies during the day and rain at lower elevations in the afternoon. Also watch for the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large, steep southerly slopes.
Beware of extremely steep slopes just below the ridge and branch ridges.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (17th).
At higher elevations, there is more than 100 cm of snowfall with strong west to northwest winds due to the recent stormy weather, but settling is progressing and bonding within the snowpack is expected to increase. Wind slabs were forming on the ridge and just below the branch ridges, but no significant instability was reported.
As of 4:00, the temperature at Ameda Fujiwara is -1.5°C. There has been no snowfall in the past 24 hours and settling is in progress. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting that the area will be moderately covered by high pressure, but will be affected by a frontal system and moist air, making it cloudy in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture, with rain or snow showers in some areas in the evening.
