Travel and Terrain Advice

For those gaining elevation, beware of unstable snow remaining on extreme terrain shapes. Also, in the forest, watch out for "terrain traps" in gully and other areas. Rain is forecast at lower elevations due to the front and moist air. Rainfall has a strong influence on snow accumulation. Watch for loose snow avalanches due to wet snow and glide avalanches in areas with glide cracks. Weather conditions will worsen towards night, so plan your activities with that in mind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (17th), several size 1-3 slab avalanches were observed, likely originating during the stormy weather on the 16th. In addition, a size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were also observed yesterday afternoon on a sunny steep slope.

Snowpack

The stormy snow settled steadily under yesterday's clear skies and warmer temperatures, but the effects of the very strong winds of the 16th were evident even at lower elevations. For example, several slab avalanches were observed in the extreme terrain of the lower part of the ridge. The wind ridge has exposed a hard snow surface, and a hard wind slab has formed on the downwind side. The fracture line (slab avalanche occurring on the 14th) was surveyed yesterday, and the bed surface was a Melt-Freeze crust formed by rainfall on December 31 and buried on January 1. The weak layer was also faceted snow, but the grain size was smaller, and the snow was becoming more rounding. Avalanches are closely related to terrain factors such as very steep terrain and extreme terrain geometry with numerous exposed rocks.

Weather

Today is expected to be affected by a front and moist air. The JMA is forecasting southerly winds, later northerly winds, cloudy, late afternoon to early evening, rain or snow, and daytime highs of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.5 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
