Travel and Terrain Advice

Rain is forecast at lower elevations due to the front and moist air. Rainfall will have a strong influence on snow accumulation. Watch for loose snow avalanches due to wet snow and glide avalanches in areas with glide cracks. Weather conditions will worsen towards night, so plan your activities with that in mind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 17), several avalanches of size 2-2.5 were observed near the treeline. All are believed to have occurred during the stormy weather on January 16.

Snowpack

The stormy snow made good progress settling with yesterday's sunny skies and warmer temperatures; the effects of the very strong winds of the 16th were evident even at lower elevations. Ridges hit by the wind had exposed hard snow surfaces, and hard wind slabs formed on the leeward side. In addition, the snow surface was wet at lower elevations where the effects of solar radiation and warmer temperatures were stronger.

Weather

Today, the area is expected to be affected by a front and a pressure trough. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later northerly winds, cloudy, rain before noon, and a daytime high of 9 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 1 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
