Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a mixed day of winter and spring. Those gaining elevation should carefully check the bonding of new and old snow. During the ascent, try to use small, safe, convex terrain, etc., to step in or make ski cuts with your skis. Even if it feels relatively stable, starting the day on smaller slopes is a good option. This is because snow changes quickly today and tends to stabilize over time. Please choose simple slopes and use safe areas for smart group management. At lower elevations, be alert for slopes with glide cracks. This one requires vigilance throughout the day.

Avalanche Problem

The snowfall is occurring in relatively light wind conditions. This has led to a high probability of dangerous slabs forming just below the ridge, i.e., in the vicinity of your choice of drop points. Avoid extreme, convex, or isolated shapes where the snowpack is likely to be unstable.

Due to yesterday's rainfall, the ski patrol is reporting widening glide cracks and glide avalanches. The same temperature increase is forecast for today as yesterday, so stay away from slopes with glide cracks.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (18th), a size 1.5 glide avalanche was observed at around 700 m elevation. A size 1 loose snow avalanche was also observed at higher elevations.

Snowpack

Yesterday (18th), it rained in the afternoon at the foot of the mountain. The freezing level was around 1500-1700 m, and snowfall was recorded throughout the day near the treeline. Yesterday's rainfall was recorded at the Sekisan AMeDAS at about 12 mm, so it is estimated that 15-20 cm of snow had fallen by this morning at the higher elevations. So far, the snowfall has occurred under light wind conditions, and a loose snow avalanche was observed as of yesterday.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, then southerly winds, rain or snow, cloudy from early afternoon, and a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.).
