Be on the lookout for soft slabs that have formed in areas where the snowpack is likely to be unstable (extreme shapes, convex shapes, shapes that do not support the snowpack underneath, etc.). Slabs that are easily recognizable and firm do not form, as they do after strong winds. However, soft slabs have formed due to the progressive sintering of the snow and the movement of the snow under the influence of weak winds, which reacted to the human stimulus yesterday. Please act on the assumption that generally the same conditions will continue today and check the snowpack. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice hazards above you. Please manage your group by making good use of the terrain.
Yesterday (19th), several storm slab avalanches of size 2.5-3 were observed in Alpine and size 1-1.5 around Treeline. In addition, numerous size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed in the same elevation zone. Around the treeline, the snowpack showed a sensitive response to the skier.
Observations at Treeline indicate that the bonding of old and new snow is not too bad. Most of the numerous avalanches reported yesterday were caused by snowfall on the 18th. From yesterday to this morning, wind conditions have remained light. However, in areas affected by the wind, the snowpack has the characteristics of a slab and is more responsive to human stimulation.
Today's weather will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, snow or rain in the afternoon, and a daytime high of 4 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 0.0 °C (as of 5:00), and there has been no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
