Be on the lookout for soft slabs that have formed in areas where the snowpack is likely to be unstable (extreme shapes, convex shapes, shapes that do not support the snowpack underneath, etc.). Slabs that are easily recognizable and firm do not form, as they do after strong winds. However, soft slabs have formed due to the progressive sintering of the snow and the movement of the snow under the influence of weak winds, which reacted to the human stimulus yesterday. Please act on the assumption that conditions will continue to be generally the same today as the day before and check the snowpack conditions. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice hazards above you. Please manage your group by making good use of the terrain.
Yesterday (the 19th), several size 1-1.5 glide avalanches were observed at lower elevations. Several size 1 loose snow avalanches or size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were observed at higher elevations.
Observations at Treeline indicate that the bonding of old and new snow is not as bad as it could be. The storm slab avalanche reported yesterday was due to snowfall on the 18th. Wind conditions have remained light since yesterday until this morning, but in areas where there is some wind influence, the snowpack has the characteristics of a slab and is more responsive to human stimulation.
Today, the weather will be covered by high pressure at first, but then will be affected by a trough. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northeasterly winds during the day, cloudy skies, rain or snow at night, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
